As a caregiver, you have options to come to Canada to become a permanent resident or work temporarily.
Permanent residence for caregivers
Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot
The Home Child Care Provider Pilot and the Home Support Worker Pilot are 5-year pilot programs that let qualified caregivers and their family members come to Canada with the goal of becoming permanent residents.
The caregiver program enables temporary residents holding a caregiver work permit and caregivers approved for their work permit through an employer's positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) application before November 30, 2014, to attain permanent residency in Canada.
As a live-in caregiver, you have the option to request an open work permit as part of your application for permanent residence under the Live-in Caregiver Class. To be eligible, you must have held valid work permits under the program for a duration of two years or more and have accumulated a minimum of 3,900 hours or two years of work as a live-in caregiver within a maximum of four years.
The Caregiver program considers a CLB Level 4 as the qualifying score.
Generally, there is no specified age limit for caregivers. However, it's important to be aware that individuals under the age of 16 cannot work in Canada without parental consent.
